Project "Networking for Development" presents new municipal initiaves of networking in Odivelas

|

It took place on May 30, at the Exhibition Center of Odivelas, another meeting to promote networking among the 14 Portuguese municipalities involved in the project "Networking for Development: From town twinning to a more efficient cooperation."

In this meeting an assessment and evaluation of the activities undertaken during the first year of the project were made  and next year activities  were planned. The municipality of Marinha Grande also promoted, as a good practice case, the Intermunicipal Cooperation Agreement signed on 9 September 2008 between Portuguese Municipalities (Amadora, Fundão, Grandola, Marinha Grande, Moita, Montemor-o-Novo, Nisa, and Setubal and Vila Real de Santo Antonio) and the Municipality of Tarrafal, Santiago Island, Cape Verde.

This pooling of efforts and wills already allowed the support to Cape Verde in various domains, especially in terms of equipping and improvement of primary schools. The twinning of each Portuguese municipality with the municipality of Tarrafal served as the motto for the signing of the agreement that was readily recognized and valued by Portuguese Institute for Development Support, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities. The 10 municipalities now want to strengthen their activities and respond progressively to the needs identified by the municipality Tarrafal.

Of the 14 municipalities involved in the project Networking for Development, five signed the said agreement with Tarrafal. Working once again together under the said project  represents a new opportunity to streamline and strengthen their partnership which should work as a model of inter-municipal cooperation to replicate at national and international level.

In the afternoon a workshop was held on "Learning from experience", open to municipal officers and non-state actors, where some initiatives were presented and discussed for networking with municipalities such as the Project Child Friendly Cities (UNICEF), the Project Enlaces (FEC), Development Project in the Centre of Public Policy (IEEI) and the Networking for Development Project (IMVF).

The workshop was attended and participated by Margarida Marques - Head of European Commission Representation in Portugal, Inês Rosa - Vice-President of the Portuguese Institute for Development Support and two international partners of the project, Petra Schmettow of FINEP and  Ánxelo Vicente of the Fondo Galego de Cooperación and Solidariedade.

This initiative was part of the Project Networking for Development: From town twinning to a more efficient cooperation, implemented by IMVF in partnership with the Municipality of Loures, the Municipality of Marinha Grande, the Fondo Galego de Cooperación and Solidariedade and FINEP;  funded by the European Commission and the IPAD - Portuguese Institute for Development Support.
